On Wednesday, November 2, 2016, The Rockefeller University hosted its fifth annual CELEBRATING SCIENCE Benefit Lecture and Dinner, sponsored by the Parents & Science initiative. Rockefeller's new President Richard P. Lifton, M.D., Ph.D., hosted the evening, which honored Rockefeller’s Chair of the Board of Trustees Russ Carson and his family: Judy, Cecily, Edward, and Madeline. This year’s featured speaker was world renowned Rockefeller physician-scientist Robert B. Darnell, M.D., Ph.D. Dr. Darnell spoke on the topic of Next-Generation Genomics: Re-inventing Medicine for You and Your Children. He discussed how the rapidly advancing field of genomics is transforming biomedical research and healthcare. As diseases are reclassified genetically, risks will be redefined and new insights into treatment and prevention will emerge.
Four hundred guests enjoyed an elegant tented dinner on the University’s esplanade. Rockefeller’s Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees, Richard E. Salomon, paid tribute to the Carsons for their philanthropic leadership in New York and beyond. Through the Carson Family Charitable Trust, founded in 1990, the family supports numerous organizations devoted to health, education, medicine, arts and culture, and community development.
The evening raised nearly $2.8 million, including $157,000 from an auction conducted by distinguished Sotheby’s auctioneer Hugh Hildesley. The proceeds from this event support Rockefeller’s research on children and adolescent health and development, as well as the University’s Science Outreach Program.
