SPEAKER

ROBERT B. DARNELL, M.D., PH.D.
Robert and Harriet Heilbrunn Professor, The Rockefeller University
Founding Director and CEO, New York Genome Center

What will your child’s medical future look like? That future is dawning swiftly. Next-generation DNA sequencing is revolutionizing the study of human genetic variation and its role in health and disease. While the Human Genome Project took some 13 years and $3 billion to yield its first complete human DNA sequence, today’s next-generation technology can sequence an individual’s genome in a few days, at a cost lower than $2,000. Ten years from now, personal genomes will be an integral part of the physician’s arsenal of diagnostic tools, pointing the way toward optimal treatment options.

For an insider’s perspective on these issues, we turn to Rockefeller physician-scientist Robert B. Darnell, a world leader in this rapidly developing field. On November 2, Dr. Darnell will discuss how genomics is transforming biomedical research and healthcare. There are now about 10,000 diseases known to have genetic origins. With the power of next-generation sequencing, that number is expected to increase ten-fold within the next decade. As diseases are reclassified genetically, risks will be redefined, and new insights into treatment and prevention will emerge.

Proceeds from the Celebrating Science Benefit support the Parents & Science Discovery Fund, providing vital resources for Rockefeller scientists working in areas relevant to child and adolescent development. These funds also support Rockefeller’s science outreach programs for students and educators in the New York area, including professional development workshops for educators; Learning At the Bench (LAB) Experiences for middle and high school classes; the annual Talking Science Lecture for high school students; the highly regarded Summer Science Research Program; and the annual Science Saturday festival for children and families.
